Jamshed Dasti sells pickup truck to sustain free buses

Reported in Dunya (May 2, 2014), lawmaker Jamshed Dasti has sold his pickup truck for Rs 2.3 million. He will use the money to settle the outstanding fuel costs of the five free buses he runs in Muzaffargarh.

Customs officers scuffle over ‘tribute’

Express reports (May 6, 2014) that two Customs officers began to scuffle (gutham gutha) over the distribution of tribute (nazrana) collected during the custom duty amnesty scheme for vehicles in Lahore. Senior officials ran to the scene (dorrain lag gai) and arranged a settlement behind closed doors.

Reported in Jang (May 6, 2014), former Sindh chief minister Arbab Ghulam Rahim’s application for leave from the provincial assembly was rejected, and he was told to submit his passport to the Sindh Assembly. Deputy speaker Shehla Raza said he was absent for 99 of the 100 days the Sindh Assembly met.

Eloped couple’s families fight in court

Reported in Express (May 7, 2014), families of a couple facing a court case for love marriage began to fight each other when they arrived for the hearing. The basement of the new Lahore High Court building became a war zone (maidan-e-jang ki shakal ikhtiyar kar gai). Security officers arrived at the scene and controlled the situation.

Amendment to ban liquor for non-Muslims

Reported in Jang (May 7, 2014), a minority legislator from the JUI-F has proposed a constitutional amendment in the National Assembly to extend the prohibition of liquor to non-Muslims. The amendment was presented by Muslim and non-Muslim lawmakers with consensus. Non-Muslim members said drinking was forbidden in all religions.

Two rival groups of PTI lawyers wing emerge in Lahore

According to Waqt (May 4, 2014), two rival wings of Pakistan Tehike-e-Insaf Lawyers Forum have surfaced recently. While the Fayyaz Meher group was celebrating PTI’s foundation day at the Lahore High Court, the Shadab Jaffery group sent them a text message saying their foundation day celebrations had no legal status.

Salma Agha quarrels with daughter over love affair

According to daily Aaj (May 4, 2012), veteran actress Salma Agha’s daughter Sasha Agha quarreled with her mother (talkh jumlon ka tabadla) over a Hindu musician. Salma Agha was in a police station to complain that musician Sachin Gupta was enticing her daughter (warghala raha hai) when Sasha arrived, and the two quarreled. The police realized the sensitivity of the situation (muamlay ki nazakat ko samajhtay hue) and sent them home.
