Dr. Sufiyan Aslam, a luminary in the realm of physics and a revered steward of academia, has departed this world, leaving in his wake a legacy etched in the hearts and minds of all who had the fortune to know him. His life was a symphony of wisdom, grace, and steadfast devotion to education, resonating across generations.

With over three decades of unwavering service to teaching, research, and leadership, Dr. Aslam stood as a cornerstone of the Forman Christian College community. He earned his PhD in Molecular Physics from Lomonosov Moscow State University in the USSR and an MS in Molecular Gas Dynamics from Sofia State University in Bulgaria. His scholarly journey illuminated the paths of countless students, while his intellect and gentle spirit uplifted his colleagues.

Dr. Aslam’s contributions to Forman Christian College were both vital and transformative, particularly during the post-denationalisation period—a time of renewal and growth. His strategic vision and resolute guidance shepherded the institution toward a brighter future. He held various esteemed positions, including Chair of the Physics Department, Dean of Sciences, and Acting Vice-Rector. Most recently, he served as Associate Vice Rector for Faculty Affairs, where his advocacy for faculty advancement became a testament to his commitment to the academic community.

Yet, his true legacy transcends titles and positions. Dr. Aslam was a beacon of mentorship, a source of quiet strength and boundless encouragement. His counsel and compassion nurtured thousands of lives, shaping futures with a gentle hand. Though I never had the privilege of being his student in the classroom, I was fortunate to work alongside him as a work-study program student. My fondest recollections are those simple, yet profound moments spent in his office—seeking his signature for permission to undertake extra courses. In those instances, his pen conveyed more than approval; it whispered belief. That belief became the wind beneath my wings, propelling me ever forward.

Another cherished memory is one that imparted a lifelong lesson about the responsibility an educator holds toward their students. It was my first job interview for a part-time on-campus administrative position at Forman Christian College. As I entered the room, Dr. Aslam looked at me, smiled, and turned to the other interviewer beside him, declaring, 'She is hired; we do not need to interview her.' Surprised, I protested, insisting that the process be fair. He looked at me with his gentle firmness and said, 'It is not about you; it is about us. You are our student. We know what we gave you and what you are capable of.' That unwavering belief in me, coupled with his understanding of his role as an educator, became a guiding principle in my journey through life and work.

Dr. Sufiyan Aslam’s journey was a tapestry woven with threads of knowledge, integrity, and humanity. He will be deeply mourned by his family, colleagues, students, and the wider academic fraternity.
