A Lahore sessions court has granted post-arrest bail to a Christian couple in a blasphemy case on Wednesday.
The plea for bail of a Christian couple was heard by Additional Sessions Judge Mian Shahid Javed. After hearing the arguments, the court approved the bail plea of the couple against surety bonds of Rs10,000 each.
On September 8, the Lahore police registered a case against the Christian couple under Section 295-B of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPP). The complaint was lodged by their neighbor, Mohammad Tamoor.
The couple, Kiran Bibi and her husband Shaukat Masih, were accused of throwing torn pieces of the Holy Quran from the roof of their house in the North Cantonment area.
The complainant, Taimur, claimed that he saw the papers flying towards the ground when he was buying barbecue from a nearby shop near Rangers Headquarters.
Fortunately, the police intervened in time to prevent any untoward incident or lynching of the Christian couple. The police arrested the couple, thereby saving their lives from the extremist individuals who had gathered, demanding the death of the alleged blasphemers.
Minority rights activist Joseph Jansen has lauded the verdict of the court and termed it a victory of justice. He also praised the legal team for presenting arguments in an effective manner that resulted in relief for the poor couple.
