National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman Aftab Sultan has tendered his resignation from his post, citing personal reasons.
He was appointed chief of the bureau on July 21, 2022, for a period of three years.
A statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) confirmed that Aftab Sultan had presented his resignation to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
"The premier lauded the services of Aftab Sultan and praised his honesty and righteousness. The prime minister reluctantly accepted Aftab Sultan's resignation at his demand, according to the statement issued by PM Office.
According to sources, the former NAB chairman had declined to make arrests of politicians on ‘someone's orders’. "Aftab Sultan was under pressure by the government and some institutions during the last four months, and he was being forced to lodge cases against ‘few people’.
Sources revealed that Aftab Sultan had also clipped the arrest authority of NAB director generals to avoid abuse of power by the officials.
The Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) government appointed Aftab Sultan as NAB chairmen after Justice (ret.) Javed Iqbal's tenure expired in 2022.
Aftab Sultan has earlier served as inspector general of the Punjab police and the commandant of the National Police Academy. His father and mother-in-law have been members of the National Assembly twice.
