Obituary: M Z Farrukh, The Quiet Man Who Mattered

Mamoo Jan, Muhammad Zaheer Farrukh, known by his pen name M Z Farrukh, passed away on August 16, 2024, in San Jose, California. Over his 93 years, he left a lasting impression on all who knew him through his deep commitment to family, community, and the principles he held dear.

He was born on October 17, 1931, in Delhi, India, to illustrious educationist Sufi Muhammad Saghir Hasan from Amritsar and leading poet Rabia Pinhan from Bareilly.

Growing up as a child in pre-independence India, Mamoo Jan was shaped by the composite cultural and intellectual environment of the Subcontinent. From a young age, he embraced the values of hard work, education, and integrity that guided him throughout his life. His passion for learning was a defining aspect of his character. Whether exploring literature, history, or the sciences, his understanding was both broad and deep. Yet, his pursuit of knowledge was never just about personal achievement; he believed in using what he learned for the greater good, a principle that shaped much of his life.

He attended the MAO College and the Government College in Lahore before furthering his studies at the Harvard Law School and the London School of Economics. Mamoo Jan held several senior positions within Pakistan's finance and taxation sectors at both the federal and provincial levels. His career in civil service was cut short during General Ziaul Haq's martial law, prompting him to relocate to London. There, he became a regular columnist for Pakistan's evening newspapers, The Daily News and Leader, where his sharp wit and insightful commentary earned him widespread respect. He also authored Matters of Moment, a satirical book on international, Pakistani, and British politics.

Mamoo Jan's professional journey reflected his character and dedication. His career, spanning several decades, was marked by wisdom, foresight, and an unwavering commitment to integrity. In a world often driven by compromise, he remained steadfast in his ethical conduct, earning the admiration of his colleagues not only for his professional abilities but also for the principled way in which he lived. He led by example, with empathy, transparency, and respect for those around him.

What truly set him apart was his ability to balance professional success with a strong sense of social responsibility. More than a successful professional, he was a mentor, a guide, and a source of inspiration for many. He had a unique ability to recognise potential in others and took great joy in helping to nurture that potential. His advice and encouragement often propelled young professionals to achieve more than they thought possible. He understood that true leadership was not just about personal success but about empowering others to succeed as well.

He was always willing to share his knowledge and experience with young professionals, recognising the importance of nurturing the next generation of leaders

At the core of his life was his family. He was a devoted father and grandfather who deeply valued the relationships that defined his personal life. Together with his wife, he raised a family that embodies the values of integrity, compassion, and a commitment to lifelong learning. His love for his family was evident in everything he did, and he worked hard to pass down these values through the generations. His faith and belief in the importance of serving others were central to his values.

His dedication to service extended beyond his professional and family life. He was actively involved in various philanthropic endeavours, believing strongly in the importance of giving back. His contributions were not limited to financial support; he also gave his time, energy, and expertise to causes that were important to him. He understood the value of community and worked to ensure that resources and opportunities were available to those who needed them most.

One of the most significant aspects of his community involvement was his role as a mentor. He was always willing to share his knowledge and experience with young professionals, recognising the importance of nurturing the next generation of leaders. He supported educational initiatives that provided opportunities to those who lacked access, making a tangible difference in many lives. His legacy of mentorship will continue to inspire future generations.

M Z Farrukh's life was a testament to the power of integrity, service, and dedication. His influence extends far beyond his immediate family, touching countless individuals and communities. He will be remembered as a man of great character whose contributions were driven by a deep sense of purpose, and his impact will continue to be felt through the lives of those he mentored, the organisations he served, and the family he cherished.

Reflecting on his life, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the values he instilled in me and the many ways he shaped who I am today. His legacy is one of wisdom and a belief in humanity's potential to achieve remarkable things when guided by principles of integrity and service. His memory will forever remain in my heart, a reminder of the enduring impact one person can have on the lives of others. As I remember him, I celebrate a life well-lived and a legacy that will continue to inspire and guide me.
