Man Kills Son In Peshawar Over Hoisting Political Party’s Flag At Home

A father has allegedly killed his son in Budhbir, a Peshawar suburb, after the younger man displayed a PTI flag on the roof of the house during a fierce quarrel, BBC Urdu reported on Monday.

A case has been filed on the complaint of Arif-ur-Rahman, the deceased Atta-ur-Rehman's brother, stating that the father and son had a continuous and severe verbal altercation about politics, after which the father became enraged and opened fire on his son with a pistol.

Arif-ur-Rahman, the complainant in this case and the victim's brother, told the BBC that his brother lived in Qatar and worked as a sanitation worker. His brother had returned home to Peshawar after taking a two-month leave and was scheduled to return to Qatar in 20 days.

Arif says that the disagreement between his father and brother began with the hanging of the PTI party flag on the roof of the home, which developed into angry words, and that his father shot Atta-ur-Rehman in a fit of wrath.

"My younger brother Atta brought the flag home and placed it on the roof, but my father was not pleased," he added. According to Arif, his father advised his brother to "vote for whoever you want, but raising this flag is not right."

Arif says that his younger brother began a dispute with his father about how it was not a big deal to plant the flag, which finally escalated to the point that Noor Rehman pulled out a pistol and shot at his son.

According to the FIR, Atta-ur-Rehman was being taken to Lady Reading Hospital for treatment, but he died on the way.

Arif stated that his father had retired from his profession some time ago. His father does not appear to belong to any political party, yet the Awami National Party (ANP) is popular in his area, and representatives of this party are elected.

The father escaped from the house. SP President Division Abdul Salam Khalid said raids are being conducted to arrest the accused.
