Supreme Court judge Justice Qazi Faez Isa has objected to the two meetings called by the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) in his absence. The meetings were held to discuss the appointments of new judges for the Sindh and Lahore High Courts, in his absence.
Justice Isa, who is currently in Spain, sent a strongly worded letter to Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial, stating that the appointment of a cook is exercised with more care than the appointment of a judge.
“It seems that more care in the appointment of a cook is exercised than in the appointment of judges,” the justice said, regretting that neither the CJP nor the secretary of the JCP had informed him about the scheduled meetings.
He said that he had learnt through media reports. that two meetings had been scheduled by the JCP for June 28 and 29, for the purpose of considering the nominees for the Sindh High Court, as well as the confirmation of the additional judges for the Lahore High Court.
Justice Isa's secretary had sent him photos of three large boxes of documents, understood to contain the particulars of the nominees to the high courts, as well as examples of their work.
"Let us be allowed to do our constitutional duty properly and with due deliberation," he said, suggesting the postponing of the meetings until after the Supreme Court Vacations.
“This will also give all JCP members the possibility to participate, and after having had the opportunity to examine the documents in the said 5 boxes. They would also have the requisite time to make enquiries about the proposed nominees.”
