A policeman and several civilians were injured in violent clashes between law enforcement agencies and protestors who had taken to the street against persistent loadshedding in Karachi’s Mauripur area.
Earlier, people exasperated by prolonged power outages in hot and humid weather had taken to the streets in Teen Hatti, Saddar Preedy Street, Jubilee Market, Shah Faisal Colony, Surjani Town, University Road, MT Khan Road, Nishtar Road, and 14 other areas of the metropolis.
The police and protesters could not reach an agreement despite the passage of more than 24 hours and the traffic on a route that connects to the city’s port was still blocked. However, the police arrested four protesters and used water cannons to disperse them.
The protesters said that the area is witnessing constant loadshedding in hot weather despite them paying their utility bills.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had warned on Monday that the country may face increased loadshedding in the coming month of July.
According to reports, the country’s power supply is 22,500 megawatts while the demand is 28,000 megawatts, leaving a shortfall of 5,500 megawatts. The shortfall has led to several hours of power outages.
Several areas in the metropolis are witnessing power outages of 14 hours or more a day.
