It was reported by Daily Dunya (14 August 2019) that thousands of citizens from Lahore ended up in hospital after overeating meat on Eid-al-Azha. The report cited figures of above 3,000 people having been brought to various hospitals in this context. Moreover, the report also quoted healthcare professionals emphasizing that in this weather, it is harmful to consume more than 250 grams of meat.


London calling


Sheikh Rasheed, according to Daily Express (14 August 2019), announced that he had been invited by Lord Nazir to participate in a Black Day event to protest Indian policies in Kashmir. He emphasized that he was going to London for the sake of Kashmir, and not to save any laundered money.

Daily Jang (14 August 2019) quoted Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Information and Broadcasting Firdous Ashiq Awan as suggesting to Bilawal Bhutto Zardari that on this 14th of August, he ought to distance himself from the corruption of his father and aunt, and in doing so, become a soldier of Quaid-e-Azam and a hero of Pakistan.

On the situation in India


PM Imran Khan was quoted by Daily Jang (15 August 2019) as saying that in Modi’s India the judges were afraid (khaufzadda), the media was restricted (qeyd) and the opposition was silent (khamosh) and unable to offer any alternative. The report further stated in the PM’s view, this is similar to what the Nazis did in Germany.

US President Donald Trump, according to Daily Jang (15 August 2019), expressed his view that India and China were no longer developing nations and that the US would no longer allow them to derive further advantages from the World Trade Organization (WTO).


You too, Malaysia?


It was reported by Daily Dunya (17 August 2019) that Dr. Zakir Naik is now under investigation in Malaysia too, after controversial remarks in which he opined that the Hindus in Malaysia had 100 times more freedom than the Muslim minority in India. The report stated that he has been living in Malaysia for the past three years after coming under allegations of hate speech and money laundering in India.


Effective measures


The Chief Minister of Punjab Usman Buzdar, according to Daily Dunya (18 August 2019), issued orders for practical steps to control rising prices. In this context he asked the authorities and relevant departments to go into the field to give relief to the people. Moreover, he stated that the steps taken must be seen on the ground rather than just verbal assurances (zubani jama kharch).


On foreign policy


Siraj-ul-Haq of the Jamaat-e-Islami, according to Daily Express (18 August 2019), expressed his view that past governments had promoted trade with India rather than solving the Kashmir issue, and that Vajpayee and Modi were accorded red-carpet welcomes. He went on to say that trade in potatoes, tomatoes and onions was kept going – and that this was a failure of foreign policy.
