FATF or the Financial Action Task Force, an intergovernmental organization supposed to set international standards to combat money laundering and terrorist financing, has been widely used to target non-profit organizations (NPOs) and civil society by governments due to a particular recommendation of FATF. In this episode of New Wave Global, host Rabia Mehmood speaks with Sangeeta Goswami, Policy and Advocacy Adviser at Human Security Collective (HSC), a nonprofit organization based in the Netherlands. Goswami discusses how FATF rules, created primarily by wealthy nations, are being used by governments worldwide to restrict NGO operations. She also highlights the detrimental effects these rules have on NGOs, including challenges in securing funding and operating freely, which ultimately hinder their ability to fulfill their missions. Tune in for an insightful conversation on the challenges faced by NGOs under FATF regulations and the broader implications for civil society organizations around the world.
