Islamabad district and sessions court has suspended Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan's arrest warrant issued against him in the case related to "threatening a female judge" till March 16.
Former prime minister Imran Khan challenged the arrest warrant in court, which prompted the development. The plea was heard by Judge Faizan Haider Gillani.
Lawyers Naeem Haider Panjotha and Intezar Haider Panjotha challenged the arrest warrant on behalf of Imran Khan.
On Monday, the Islamabad district and sessions court issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against Imran Khan in the "female judge threatening case," after which a police team from Islamabad departed for Lahore via helicopter to arrest PTI Chairman Imran Khan.
Earlier, Civil Judge Rana Mujahid Rahim announced the three-page reserved verdict.
The judge rejected Imran Khan's petition seeking exemption from appearing before the court in hearings and directed the police to present the former premier before it by March 29.
Islamabad police were on their way to Lahore to take Imran Khan into custody, whereas the PTI chairman was leading a rally in Lahore as part of a campaign ahead of elections in Punjab scheduled to be held on April 30.
The PTI chairman once again failed to appear before the court and filed a plea seeking an exemption from physically appearing, requesting approval for attending the court proceedings virtually via video link.
During the hearing yesterday, Imran Khan’s lawyer, Intezar Haider Panjutha, told the court that it was not safe for the elderly politician to come to Islamabad from Lahore due to security threats. He added that a plea has been filed in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking permission to attend the court proceeding via video link.
Earlier, the sessions court had rejected the PTI chief's plea by saying "if Imran did not appear in court today, a non-bailable arrest warrant against him would be issued. The judge said that if Imran Khan does not appear during court hours today, he would issue a non-bailable arrest warrant against him.
