Reported in Express (March 8, 2015) Lahore Airport was shut down for half an hour after a fire inspection vehicle collided with an ambulance on a runway.

Bridegroom stops wedding for cricket match

According to Nawa-e-Waqt (March 8, 2015) when the cricket world cup game between Pakistan and South Africa became exciting (dilchasp soorat-e-haal ikhtiyar kar gya), a bridegroom in Kamaliya stopped his wedding (nikah muattal karwa diya) and asked his guests to watch the match and pray. The wedding resumed after Pakistan won.

Rs 2 million for free operation

Despite an announcement by the prime minister that the state would pay for the hospital expenses of famous Siraiki poet Shakir Shujabadi, the Lahore General Hospital asked for Rs 2 million from his family before his operation, Dunya reports (March 9, 2015). If we had Rs 2 million, his son said, we wouldn’t be asking for help.

Bribery at Islamabad airport

Nawa-e-Waqt reports (March 9, 2015) a British Pakistani secretly filmed an Islamabad airport official asking for a bribe (lain dain) to clear his luggage, and posted the video on the internet. The official has been suspended and arrested.

‘Punjab Police can get a confession out of a dog’

Quoted in Jang (March 10, 2015) a Supreme Court judge said Punjab Police could get a confession out of a dog. The court was angry when none of the suspects in the Kot Radhakishan lynching made a confession.

Imran Khan scolds worker for wedding greeting

According to Nawa-e-Waqt (March 10, 2015) Imran Khan lost his temper and scolded a worker during his party’s chaotic (badnazmi ka shikar) Women’s Day event in Lahore, when a party worker congratulated him on his wedding while he was making a speech. The scolding amused the audience (hansi say loat poat ho gaye).

Afridi declines to dance with his wife on Indian TV

Reported in Express (March 11, 2015) Shahid Afridi declined to work in the Indian television show Nach Baliye saying he did not want the entire world to look at his wife dancing. He had almost signed the deal when he was shocked to find out (thithak gya) that his wife would have to dance with him.

Millionaire’s daughter runs away with donkey-cart lover

Jang says (March 11, 2015) a millionaire’s daughter ran away from her wedding in Lahore with her lover who runs a donkey cart in Sargodha. She had already run away with him once, but her parents persuaded her to return (behla phusla kar). The couple appeared at a court in Sargodha in secret (chhuptay chhupatay).

FIA men caught helping suspects flee

Four FIA men were arrested from Lahore Airport when they were helping people on the exit control list flee the country, Dunya reports (March 12, 2015). They have been taken to an undisclosed location.

British prime minister helps Pakistani consumer

Reported in Jang (March 12, 2015) when a Pakistani homeopath tried to return his broken radionics device under warranty to its British manufacturer, they did not repair it, and eventually declined to even return the machine as-is (jawab day diya). He emailed British Prime Minister David Cameron, who responded in a matter of hours. The company was so scared (khalbali mach gayee) they got the device repaired from their workshop in Germany, added extra features, and sent it back in seven days.

South African girl comes to Hafizabad to marry Facebook lover

According to Express, (March 13, 2015) a 23-year-old woman from South Africa who fell in love with a 19-year-old Pakistani student over Facebook arrived at his village in Hafizabad to marry him. She will take him to South Africa after their wedding.

Man with machete caught entering LHC chief justice’s office

A 40-year-old man was caught entering the Lahore High Court chief justice’s office with a machete, reports Jang (March 13, 2015). Asked how he could get so close to the judge despite heightened security, the guards said he was mentally unstable and had been caught doing the same thing several times. The man said he had been trying to meet the chief justice for three years but his guards wouldn’t let him.
