According to a statement issued by Karachi Union of Journalists, Waris Raza was detained from his home and taken to an undisclosed location. While it is unclear why he was taken into custody, journalists have suggested that it is because of the book about press freedom that he worked on.
Senior journalist Hamid Mir demanded Raza's release.

PFUJ President Shehzada Zulfiquar said that Waris Raja has always worked for press freedom and his arrest is concerning.
The Karachi Union of Journalists has also issued a statement in which its president and general secretary Faheem Siddiqui said that Waris Raza had been affiliated with various organisations in print as well as electronic media. They added that he played an important role in compiling the PFUJ's book about its struggle for press freedom in the country in the last 70 years.
The statement further said that the Karachi Union of Journalists sees his arrest as an attack on freedom of speech.
