Life in Lahore (1946)
A Life magazine photograph taken likely at Lahore's Delhi Gate shows life in the city in 1946.

The diversity in clothing is striking. One woman walks towards the camera in a Burka, while another walks away wearing Shalwar Kameez and a large Dupatta. Men are seen wearing Lungis, with an optional Pagri or cap.

Lungis and Pagris are seldom worn in urban Punjab now, and are rare in rural central Punjab as well.

Unlike Dhotis, which are made of sheets, Lungis are usually sown in a tube shape, and are worn with a simple pretzel knot or a more elaborate double-twist knot. They are mostly made of cotton, but silk Lungis are also popular.
