Why oh why?


Daily Dunya (21 August 2017) reported that director Asad Baig announced a drama titled “Mujhe Kyoon Nikala?” (Why was I removed?) This was reported to be in the context of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif repeatedly asking that question about his disqualification.


Missing: one Narendra Modi


According to Daily Dunya (21 August 2017), missing posters for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi went up on a district court in Varanasi. The posters were apparently placed there by unhappy constituents from the area who, in the text printed upon them, claimed that they did not know which country Modi had moved to. Police then initiated an effort to locate the unknown individuals who put up these posters.


Zardari on enemies


Daily Dunya (21 August 2017) quoted former President Asif Ali Zardari as saying that Nawaz Sharif has no enemies, and that the former PM is his own worst enemy.


Watch out, Kaptaan?


The PPP’s Bilawal Bhutto Zardari was quoted by Daily Jang (21 August 2017) as saying that if he went on holding rallies in his current fashion, Imran Khan would soon start to cry.


Busted


It was reported by Daily Dunya (22 August 2017) that a gang of children stealing from the donation boxes of mosques in Gujranwala had been apprehended. The report stated that efforts by locals to make the children confess included making them sit in the ‘murgha’ position before handing them over to the police. The children admitted to having observed their target donation boxes for days, and then used a sharp instrument to cut into and obtain the money within. They further stated that they had received special training for this.


Far-reaching effects?


Daily Dunya (22 August 2017) quoted Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) Secretary-General Khurram Nawaz Gandapur as saying that the removal of Nawaz Sharif from office means an end to corruption. He went on to opine that the disqualification of Sharif had led to the system of commissions, kickbacks and offshore underworld being shaken to its core (choolein hill gaeen).

Daily Jang (22 August 2017) reported that Karachi police arrested 4 fake policemen involved in ‘snap checking’ on the street.


“For his sins”


Daily Express (25 August 2017) quoted PML-Zia leader Ejaz-ul-Haq as saying that Nawaz Sharif was facing the consequences for betraying Islam (Islam se ghadaari) and that God had sent his chastisement (azab) upon him. The report quoted Ejaz-ul-Haq as saying that Sharif had been elected Prime Minister three times, but he had failed to implement an Islamic system and that in doing so, he had pleased a Hindu and Jewish lobby.


Nordic rejection


According to Daily Express (26 August 2017), former president General (retd.) Pervez Musharraf sought a meeting with Norwegian prime minister Erna Solberg at an event in Oslo, but was prevented from speaking to her after he made his way to the front seats. He then left the event immediately. According to the report, this came just one day after the former President’s lecture at the Nobel Peace Centre had to be cut short due to hostile members of the audience during the Q-and-A session.


Imran Khan’s predictions


PTI chief Imran Khan was quoted by Daily Nawa-i-Waqt (26 August 2017) as saying that Zardari is the leader of looters (looteray) in Sindh, and that in a few days, he too would be asking “Mujhe kyoon nikala?” (Why was I removed?). Khan went on to predict that Zardari would leave quietly, since he does not engage in acting (ada-kari).


Short on time?


According to Daily Express (27 August 2017), the leader of the opposition, Khursheed Shah, stated that ‘we’ lack the patience (bardaasht) for long tenures of governments – and demanded that the duration of elected assemblies be cut down to 4 years.
