Police emergency number down for 7 hours


Reported in Dunya (October 9, 2015) the landline phone connection of the police emergency number 15 was down for seven hours continuously. A number of crimes could not be reported.

Rickshawalas surround police station



Express reports (October 10, 2015) when a traffic warden fined a rickshaw, its woman passenger staged a sit-in on his motorcycle. Other rickshaw drivers also gathered, and besieged the nearby police station. The protestors and traffic wardens quarreled (talkh kalami) and scuffled (hatha pai).

Sindh school popular because of clean drinking water



According to Dunya (October 11, 2015) girls in a desert village in Sindh go to a school only because it serves two glasses of clean drinking water – one in the morning and the other in the afternoon. A third glass of water is not easily allowed. The gatekeeper travels several miles on his bicycle in the morning to get the water. He is paid the same salary as the teachers.

Imran Khan and Ayaz Sadiq born in Multan



Two boys born in Multan’s Nishtar Hospital on the day of the election in Lahore’s NA-122 constituency were named Imran Khan and Ayaz Sadiq, Dunya reports (October 12, 2015). Ayaz Sadiq weighed 6.5 pound and Imran Khan weighed 5.5 pounds.

Hungry PTI polling agents turn hostile 



Reported in Jang (October 12, 2015) polling agents belonging to Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf at one polling station in Lahore’s NA-122 constituency began shouting  slogans against their own party when they were not given lunch. They also surrounded the car of Chaudhry Sarwar’s wife to register their protest.

Hajis up in arms about luggage 



According to Express (October 13, 2015) a plane belonging to a private airline left the luggage of 170 pilgrims on the flight back from Hajj. The passengers were up in arms (shadeed hagama arai) at Islamabad airport. The administration calmed them down, but the airline staff locked their office and disappeared.

Khawaja Asif is ‘headmaster’



Nawa-e-Waqt reports (October 13, 2015) when Water and Power Minister Khawaja Asif responded passionately to questions in the Senate, the chairman of the house Raza Rabbani called him a headmaster. Senator Shahi Sayyad of ANP praised his eloquence and said when a Pashtun understands something, the media can understand it too.

Why Rafiq Tararr continued as president 



Quoted in Express (October 14, 2015) former president Rafiq Tararr said he continued to remain the president after Pervez Musharraf’s coup on the advice of Mian Sharif. As a president, he could stop the likely hanging of Nawaz Sharif.

PIA flight attendants arrested for smuggling stolen phones



Reported in Nawa-e-Waqt (October 14, 2015) two flight attendants of PIA were arrested at London’s Heathrow Airport for trying to smuggle stolen mobile phones. The flight was delayed by an hour, and the man and the woman accused of the crime were removed from service.

Police chases transgenders for ‘birthday without permission’


Police in Sargodha filed a case against 200 transgenders accusing them of attacking cops, Nai Baat reports (October 15, 2015). Police had raided a transgender’s birthday party, saying they had not sought permission for the event. They also accused them of damaging police vehicles, and violating the Marriage Act and Loudspeaker Act. Police are carrying out raids to arrest the suspects.
