Human rights activist Arsalan Khan, who was forcibly picked up from his house in the Clifton area of Karachi by Rangers personnel over his social media activism, has been released amid online outrage.
Arsalan Khan was picked up from his house by Rangers personnel at 4:30 AM on Friday, and was taken to an unknown place.
A Sindh Rangers spokesperson said that Arsalan was picked up based on a tip from an intelligence agency. The agency claimed that Arsalan had 'links with a terrorist organization'.
“During the interrogation, it was revealed that the accused had received financial assistance from a terrorist organisation. However, he was released after being warned to cooperate in the investigation in the future,” said the statement by the spokesperson.
It further said that the case was being transferred to the relevant authorities so that they could process it and complete the probe as a white-collar crime.
The spokesperson said in the statement that Arsalan was released after being warned about cooperating in the further investigation.
After Arsalan Khan was abducted from his house by Rangers personnel at 4:30 AM on Friday, his wife recorded a video statement saying the Rangers had abducted him in front of her and their children.
According to a video testament given by his wife, Khan was picked up from his house at 4:30 AM by 14-15 armed officers of the Rangers, who were brandishing AK-47 firearms.
When the men were questioned as to where they were taking her husband, they told her that they were detaining him because he ‘talks and posts a lot on social media’. His whereabouts are unknown since last night.
Social media users, including politicians and the journalism fraternity, had expressed outrage over the unlawful detention of the journalist and social worker.
