Morality police?


Daily Dunya reported (12 Sep 2016) that six members of the khwaja serah community from a village near Kasur were arrested by police for performing an obscene dance (fohsh dance). Police arrested in all 13 people, including the custodian of the shrine where the dance took place.

“Look at the clock!”


PProvincial law minister Rana Sanaullah was quoted by Daily Jang (12 Sep 2016) as saying that the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will not end even one minute before the proper time. Commenting on the Raiwind protest march, Mr. Sanaullah stated that Imran Khan, Sheikh Rasheed and Tahir-ul-Qadri will wander the streets aimlessly (sarrakon pe khwaar hongey).

Tall order?


Daily Dunya (12 Sep 2016) reported that Chief Minister Punjab Shabaz Sharif ordered police to launch a crackdown on organised crime, and bring organized criminal groups to an end within 60 days. Reviewing security measures for Eid, the Chief Minister went on to state that he would be satisfied with the police only when the people trust them.

Drawing a line in the sand… 


Daily Jang reported (12 Sep 2016) that a misbehaved (owbaash) young man paid a heavy price for his alleged harassment of female devotees visiting a shrine. He was beaten with shoes, his head and moustache were shaved and he was made to scrape his nose across the ground in a line. Local police claim to have no knowledge of the whole affair.

“Still not convinced…”


The Secretary-General of the Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, Liaquat Baloch, was quoted saying that the 9/11 attacks were part of a wider conspiracy within the United States. Daily Express (12 Sep 2016) quoted Mr. Baloch as saying that the 9/11 attacks were indeed a tragedy, but there has still not been any impartial investigation into those events.

“He’s no child”


The leader of the opposition In the National Assembly, Khurshid Shah was quoted saying that he should not be expected to invite the Prime Minister to parliament, because Mr. Sharif is not a child. Daily Dunya (14 Sep) quoted Mr. Shah as saying that the Prime Minister ought to remember the time when Parliament stood like a wall to save him.

King of butchers: make no bones about it!


Daily Dunya (16 Sep 2016) reported that a butcher from Karachi has achieved such skill in butchering camels that he is able to separate the hide and meat from the bones, leaving the entire skeleton intact. The butchery maestro reportedly charges Rs. 50,000 for doing this, and provided a standing camel skeleton, much to the delight of his audience. People took many selfies alongside the skeleton.

“It doesn’t work? He must be fake!”


Yet another fake pir was arrested from Kot Radha Kishan. Daily Dunya (16 Sep 2016) reported that the charlatan was caught by police after one of his victims went to the police with a talisman (taaweez) that cost him Rs. 200, but still did not function the way it was supposed to.

Wheelchairs galore…


Daily Jang reported (16 Sep 2016) that authorities in a district of Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state, are planning to break three records from the Guinness Book of World Records on the occasion of his birthday. Among these records is the distribution of 1,000 wheelchairs to handicapped people – the previous record being 346 wheelchairs distributed at one time in the US.

Style choices for Punjab’s Finest


Daily Express reported (17 Sep 2016) that uniforms in three new colours have been proposed for the Punjab Police. The proposed new styles have been sent to the Chief Minister and his cabinet for approval.
